GATELY SIGNED OFF WITH 'I'LL BE BUSY ON MY BOOK' TWEET

Tragic BOYZONE star STEPHEN GATELY was happy and busy in the days leading up to his sudden death on Saturday (10Oct09) - he was concentrating on completing a book while holidaying in Majorca, Spain.
After attending the Pride of Britain Awards on 5 October (09), the Irish pop star jetted off on vacation, telling fans he wouldn't be posting updates online for some time.
In his final Twitter.com entry on 6 October (09), Gately wrote, "still busy - lots going on. Focussing (sic) on finishing my book next so may be quiet here."
The singer was found dead on Saturday (10Oct09). Details of the tragedy have not been released.
Boyzone bandmate Shane Lynch, who is heading to Majorca to mourn Gately's passing with family and friends, cannot believe the sad news.
He tells the News of The World, "We just need to get over to where he's passed and work out what we need to do."
Fellow bandmate Keith Duffy adds, "I feel like my world has fallen apart."
A Boyzone publicist has confirmed the sad news.

Stephen Gately: Why the Boyzone singer's death is the biggest story in the UK

I would imagine that many, if not most, readers had never heard of Boyzone singer Stephen Gately before the tragic announcement this weekend that he had died in Majorca at just 33. And I would guess that a lot of you would be surprised to discover how much space British newspapers such as The Sun, The Mirror, and even a conservative-minded broadsheet like The Telegraph are giving the story.
Nor is the extensive coverage of his death merely due to the fact that the Dublin-born singer was an openly gay pop star. It is hard to overemphasize quite how hugely, and enduringly, successful the Irish Boyzone and their British boy band rivals Take That have been in the UK and Ireland over the past two decades. I lived in England for the two bands’ first periods of success in the ’90s, and although in truth I was not a fan of either act, I couldn’t help but acquire through cultural osmosis a working knowledge of their hits and various personality traits. Pretty much everyone in the country, for example, could have told you Take That’s Robbie Williams was the band’s resident joker, but that it was the quintet’s chief songwriter Gary Barlow who was destined for solo success. (And thus the entire country had to eat its collective metaphorical hat when the former’s solo career ultimately easily eclipsed that of his former colleague.)

Take That were the first to crack the UK top ten with “It Only Takes A Minute,” their 1991 cover of the old Tavares song. Over the next five years they racked up an astonishing number of hits and no fewer than eight chart-topping singles. Meanwhile, Boyzone broke through in the UK with their 1994 version of the Osmonds’ “Love Me For A Reason,” and would themselves score a half dozen number ones over the next five years, including “Words,” “All That I Need,” “You Needed Me,” and “No Matter What.”
Take That split in 1996 and Boyzone followed suit in 2000, the year after Gately went public with his sexuality. In 2005, Take That reformed without Williams and continued their hit-making ways as if they had never gone away. In November 2007, Boyzone leader Ronan Keating announced that they too were getting back together, and last year they embarked on a wildly successful tour of the UK and Ireland. Their first reunion release, “Love You Anyway,” was, remarkably, their 17th single in a row to reach the British top five.
Given the fame of Boyzone, and the fact that Gately died at such young age, you can be sure this is story that will run for a while in the British press. Anyone still bewildered by the fuss, or anyone who wants to remind themselves what the group sounded like, should check out the clip of Boyzone performing “No Matter What” below.

"Nunca vou me perdoar", diz marido de Stephen Gately

Stephen Gately funeral: Grieving Boyzone in night vigil with coffin ahead of Dublin church service

By Chris Johnson and Tom Worden
Last updated at 9:25 AM on 17th October 2009
  • Band expected to sing at the ceremony
  • Boyzone show new tattoo tributes to Stephen Gately as police reveal his final few hours
  • Bulgarian's statement to authorities revealed Gately, husband and Dochev were 'intimate' on night he died
  • Dochev had seen Gately smoking cannabis joint in flat

Boyzone's Stephen Gately was given an emotional homecoming last night as the pop star made his final journey back to his working class roots.

Heartbroken parents Margaret and Martin joined the singer's four devastated bandmates and manager Louis Walsh to pay respects at a private prayer vigil and wake in Dublin's north inner city.

About 300 local people and fans lined streets near St Laurence O'Toole Church paying their own tribute to the West End star with a gentle applause.

The coffin arrived at the church for a private ceremony ahead of today's funeral after Gately's body was flown from Majorca earlier yesterday

Local resident Bernadette Manly said they had come out in support of Gately's parents, brothers Mark, Alan and Tony and devoted sister Michelle.

'You couldn't get better people,' said Mrs Manly.
Irish boyband Westlife joined mourners in paying tribute to Gately last night.
'We are here today as friends of Stephen, not as popstars,' the band said in a statement.
'It's a shame that today we have to say goodbye to him like this. Our love and support goes out to Andy and the rest of Stephen's family. Also to Keith, Mikey, Ronan and Shane, who have lost their best friend.'

Earlier yesterday, the four remaining members of Boyzone arrived in Majorca to take Stephen's body home, revealing matching tattoos in his memory.
All of them have an 'S' for Stephen and the numbers 76 09, the years of his birth and death.

Ronan Keating, whose tattoo was visible on his right bicep, paid an emotional tribute to the singer, saying nothing will ever be the same again after his tragic death.

A source said: 'The tattoos were done as a mark of respect for Stephen.'

Keating, 32, Shane, 33, Graham, 37, and Duffy, 35, and Gately's husband Andrew Cowles brought the body home from Majorca today. They arrived in Dublin late this afternoon.
The band plan to keep a vigil overnight in the church where the service will be held and will carry the casket alongside Gately's relatives.
They will also sing at the service in St Laurence O'Toole Church.

Keating said today in Majorca: 'Last Saturday our world changed forever when we lost our friend and brother Stephen.
On the verge of tears, he continued: 'Stephen lived to perform and truly loved being centre stage.

'You can be sure he's looking down on us now wishing we'd move over so he could flash his smile for the cameras one more time.'
He thanked fans for their support, adding: 'What the future holds for the four of us is too hard to think about. We know that nothing will ever be the same without our dear friend Stephen. Farewell brother.'
The funeral will be a very musical affair as the family believe 'it's what he would have wanted'.

Much of Dublin is expected to join in the emotional farewell for a favourite son.
As preparations continued, the exact details of  what happened on the night of his death emerged for the first time.
A Majorcan police statement taken from Bulgarian Giorgio Dochev, 25, who was in their holiday apartment that evening, reveals that Gately had smoked a cannabis joint and that the trio had been 'intimate'.

Cowles

Gately's civil partner Andrew Cowles at Majorca airport yesterday

Gately, 33, was found dead in the living room of the £1m flat where he and internet tycoon husband Andrew Cowles, 32, were staying.

He died of natural causes after a fatal build-up of fluid in the lungs, thought to have been brought on by a heart attack.
Police said there were no suspicious circumstances regarding his death.

Gately

Gately's body was flown home yesterday ahead of today's funeral

Gately and Cowles had met Dochev at a gay club called The Black Cat, in Port Andratx, in the south-west of the Mediterranean island, and taken him back to the apartment.
The police statement after Dochev's interview last Saturday reads: 'Last night at around 1.30am, the witness found himself in a bar Euphoria in Palma.

'He stared a friendship with a couple of lads whose names he does not know. That after a while, in this bar, they left together to another bar called Black Cat, staying there until approx 4am - and they invited him to accompany them home to carry on having a few drinks.

Georgi Dochev, who found the body of Steven Gately, will attend his funeral

'Afterwads at around 4.10am, the three of them took a taxi and went to the address of the couple he had met in Port Andratx. Once at the residence, they were talking and became intimate, until 5.30am.'
Giorgio at this point went to a bedroom, leaving Stephen and Andrew on the sofa. The statement added the couple were both sleeping.
Five hours later, at around 10.30am Giorgio heard a long, loud doorbell but stayed in bed.

Around half-an-hour later he got up and saw the couple still on the sofa. One had his feet stretched out and the other was curled up.
Giorgio went back to bed, then heard Andrew get up and go into the main bedroom.

The Bulgarian wandered back into the lounge to have a cigarette and saw Stephen was still sleeping on the sofa.

'He then went into the bedroom where the other boy was until 1pm,' the statement read.
At that point, Dochev described getting up, having a shower and getting dressed being sitting on the sofa.
The police statement continues: 'He sits next to the boy on the sofa and looking at him gets the feeling there's something wrong as he was very motionless and he could see no breathing movements or little snores.
'He then took him by the hand and tried to wake him up without success.
'He headed quickly into the partner's bedroom and woke him up, saying there was something wrong.

'Both of them headed to the lounge and tried to sit him up, seeing that he was very stiff and in a foetal position with his face on the cushion.

St Laurence O'Toole's Church

Gately's funeral will be held at St Laurence O'Toole's Church in Dublin

'On sitting him up they saw his lips and face were blue and that liquid was coming out of his mouth.
'As they thought he might have swallowed his tongue, his partner put a finger in his mouth. At this moment, they realised he was dead so they called the emergency services at between 1.15 and 1.30pm.'

Giorgio, who also said he had seen Gately smoke a cannabis joint in the flat, claimed last night he had been invited to the funeral at St Laurence O'Toole Church in Dublin.
Louis Walsh, who is missing X Factor this weekend, Sir Elton John and members of Take That are expected to join Gately's parents Margaret and Martin among the mourners.

They have been inundated with messages and condolence cards.

The couple said last night: 'It's been a great deal of comfort through this terrible time. All of your kind throughts and prayers have helped us to get through this horrendous ordeal.'
Last night Dochev, who is in the third year of a psychology degree, told a Bulgarian radio station he was traumatised by the death - and that he knew his attendance in Dublin might prove controversial.
'I don’t know what the people will tell about me going to the burial, because I know there will be some talking — if I’ve been his lover or not.'
'I feel bad, I don’t feel good at all.

'You don’t find a dead man in the house every day . . . Do you understand what I mean?

Andrew Cowles and Stephen Gately

Happy times: Cowles and  Gately after their civil partnership in 2006

'I’m a strong man, the time heals everything, my boyfriend is here and with time passing everything will be healed. Everything will be clear when I do the interview for the British press.'
Dochev is in negotiations to sell his story for upwards of 70,000 euros.
Earlier this week, the Boyzone band members were flanked by security as they discussed the funeral arrangements at the St Laurence O'Toole Church with local police.
Local children cheered as the solemn-looking singers walked from a school adjoining the church before being driven out in the back of a police van.

During the poignant visit to see where Gately's body will be brought during his final journey home, Graham walked about the small churchyard with officers.

His three bandmates stood back, hidden in the darkness of the church doorway.
Friends of Gately have revealed he was a regular user of Class B drug cannabis.

'Yes he did enjoy smoking cannabis quite often but his lifestyle was far from rock and roll,’ said one.
Margaret Gately also revealed yesterday that there was a family history of heart problems.
The family’s lawyer, Gerald Kean, said: ‘There is a heart condition on his dad Martin's side of the family. Stephen would have had no idea he had this condition.
‘As soon as I heard he had died I knew it was a heart problem. It has lifted a huge burden off our family's shoulders,’ he added.
After seeing several family members die of heart problems, Gately's relatives will now undergo checks to see if they have any similar health issues.

Stephen Gately funeral: Ronan Keating breaks down in tears as he pays tribute to Boyzone star

By Daily Mail ReporterLast updated at 3:22 PM on 17th October 2009

Boyzone star Ronan Keating today performed a moving musical tribute at the funeral of former bandmate Stephen Gately.
The star sang In This Life as friends and family gathered to say farewell to the singer at the St Laurence O'Toole Church in Dublin.
Later, surrounded by bandmates Mikey Graham, Shane Lynch and Keith Duffy, Keating delivered a stirring eulogy, paying tribute to the man they called their 'little brother'.
He broke down in tears as he said: 'The world has lost one of its brightest stars. We have lost a brother and I have lost my wing man.
'For Stephen, we will carry on but it will never be the same without him.
'Forever young and never forgotten. A man, a friend, a brother, a son, a husband and a hero.
'We are going to miss you brother, we love you and we always will. We know you have found peace, perfect peace.'
He also told Gately's civil partner Andrew Cowles that he now had 'four new brothers' and Gately's parents Martin and Margaret they had 'four new sons', adding in a light moment that they should expect an expensive Christmas now they've also got 'eight new grandchildren'.
He also revealed Gatley's loved ones would 'by hook or by crook' finish a book that he had nearly completed about his life.

Band mate Graham added: 'He brought colour to the band - and that band now feel black and white without him.'
Gately was found dead on the sofa in his apartment in Port Andratx after a night out with Mr Cowles and Bulgarian clubber Georgi Dochev.
A post-mortem examination found he died from natural causes, the medical report recording pulmonary oedema or fluid on the lungs.

A devastated Louis Walsh, who managed Boyzone for 16 years, said outside the church: 'It's a difficult day but we have to celebrate his life.'
'It's an incredible atmosphere in the church, all his best friends are there, his family are there, it's what he would have wanted. He was just a great person.'
In a written tribute, the X Factor judge added: 'Stephen was one of life's positive people with a lovely nature and he was someone who always had a smile on his face. He loved to laugh and joke and was always the life and soul of the party and would give everyone he met his time.
'He would always thank me for the success he'd gained through Boyzone but on reflection I should be the one to have thanked him as he brought so much into my life, and the career I've loved in pop music is largely down to Stephen and the rest of Boyzone.

'I have still not come to terms with the fact that I won't see Stephen again, I keep expecting him to just turn up with a big grin on his face and deliver a cheeky wisecrack.
'I and all of Boyzone are completely broken, I've lost one of my best friends and Boyzone have lost a brother. The bond between the five was just amazing.

'They were always there for each other and always supported each other in everything that they did. The way the four guys have rallied around each other, Andy and Stephen's family this week is testament to the brotherhood of the group, I've truly never seen such closer bonds between anyone.'

IN THIS LIFE - Ronan Keating

'Let the world
Stop turning
Let the sun
Stop burning
Let them tell me love's
Not worth going through
If it all falls apart
I will know
Deep in my heart
The only dream that
Mattered had come true
In this life,
I was loved by you'

Furnish, who introduced Gately to his civil partner Andrew Cowles, said: 'I just feel incredibly sad, it just seems so unfair, I just can't make sense of it. I know when Stephen died he was the happiest he's ever been in his life.' Of his partner Sir Elton, who will miss the ceremony because of commitments in Switzerland, Furnish added: 'He's completely bereft.'
Boyzone last night staged a vigil with Gately's coffin in the Dublin church.
They spent the night beside the body at the request of Gately's mother, who said he 'didn't like to be alone'.
The band emerged from the church at 6.30am this morning where they greeted somber fans, many of whom had slept outside.
Local resident Bernadette Manly, who was among the fans outside the church, said they had come out in support of Gately's parents, brothers Mark, Alan and Tony and devoted sister Michelle.
'You couldn't get better people,' said Mrs Manly.
Westlife issued a statement last night that read: 'We are here today as friends of Stephen, not as popstars.''It's a shame that today we have to say goodbye to him like this. Our love and support goes out to Andy and the rest of Stephen's family. Also to Keith, Mikey, Ronan and Shane, who have lost their best friend.'

Stars pay tribute to Stephen Gately at funeral of Boyzone singer

Celebrities have joined friends and family of Stephen Gately at the former Boyzone singer's funeral in Dublin.

Members of Boyzone paid a moving tribute to bandmate Stephen Gately at his funeral in Dublin.
"The world has lost one of its brightest stars, we have lost our brother," Ronan Keating told guests at St Laurence O'Toole's church.
Boyzone sang Westlife track In This Life during the service before carrying the coffin out of the church.
Jason Donovan, Vanessa Feltz, Sir Elton John’s partner David Furnish and Christopher Biggins were among those who gathered at the St Laurence O’Toole Church, which was surrounded by thousands of Gately's fans.

Messages of condolences have already been received from George Michael, David and Victoria Beckham, Simon Cowell, Take That, Westlife, U2, Robbie Williams, Cheryl Cole, Colin Farrell, Sharon Osborne, Brian McFadden and Delta Goodrem.
Furnish said: "I think sometimes God wants the good pure souls early and that's the way I think of it. I can't make sense of it any other way because he was such a good man."

Sir Elton, who is on tour, sent a bouquet of yellow flowers left just outside Laurence O'Toole Church, close to the main entrance.

Boyzone's manager and X Factor judge Louis Walsh arrived at the church half an hour before the service and was greeted by cheering fans.
"He would not believe the reception he's got today. He was living his dream," Walsh said.
"It's a fantastic feeling here today – we have to celebrate his life, he would absolutely love what was happening here today.
"He was always professional, he was so likeable. I wouldn't be where I was today if it wasn't for Boyzone. We're all in this together."
Gately's former band mates Ronan Keating, Keith Duffy, Mikey Graham and Shane Lynch were joined members of another Irish boyband, Westlife.

The church could only fit 550 mourners, but around 3,000 fans standing outside the church could listen to the ceremony via loudspeakers.
Mr Biggins, who stared in the musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang with Gately, said: “He loved to work, he loved being with Boyzone, he loved singing, he loved everything.
“He was such a giver and that is what we will miss.”

Former Irish PM Bertie Ahern, father-in-law of Westlife star Nicky Byrne, said: “While this is very sad for the lads, people are so happy he achieved so much.
“It is nice to see so many people care about him.”

Gately, 33, was found dead on the sofa in his apartment in Port Andratx in Majorca last weekend after a night out with his civil partner Andrew Cowles and friend Georgi Dochev.

The Boyzone singers carried Gately's coffin to the church on Friday night and spent the night there with Gately's family in a vigil.

Mr Cowles asked that mourners make a donation to the Caudwell Children Charity, of which the pop star was an ambassador, instead of sending flowers.
